Ambient temperature and humidity significantly impact the cutting disc’s performance (cutting efficiency, precision) and durability (service life, structural stability) through material degradation and environmental interaction.

Key Impacts of Temperature

  1. High Temperature: Accelerates resin bond aging (common in resin-bonded discs), reducing adhesion between abrasive grains and the bond. This causes premature grain shedding, decreasing cutting efficiency and increasing disc wear. Excessive heat can also warp the disc’s base material, affecting cutting precision and even leading to breakage.

  2. Low Temperature: Makes resin and rubber-based bonds brittle, lowering their shock resistance. The disc becomes prone to chipping or cracking during high-impact cutting. Low temperatures also reduce the flexibility of the disc’s matrix, compromising its ability to adapt to cutting vibrations.

Key Impacts of Humidity

  1. High Humidity: Triggers corrosion of metal components in the disc (e.g., reinforcing fibers, steel cores in some abrasive discs), weakening structural integrity over time. Moisture can seep into the bond-resin interface, reducing adhesion and causing delamination. For porous abrasive materials, moisture absorption increases disc weight and reduces cutting sharpness.

  2. Low Humidity: Causes excessive drying of resin or organic bonds, making them brittle and prone to cracking. Dry environments may also increase static electricity buildup between the disc and the workpiece, affecting cutting stability and potentially attracting dust that accelerates wear.

Combined Effects

Extreme temperature-humidity combinations (e.g., high temperature + high humidity) amplify damage: resin bonds degrade faster, metal components corrode more severely, and the disc’s overall structural stability declines sharply. Moderate, stable conditions (e.g., 15–30°C, 40–60% relative humidity) minimize these negative effects.
